Meteorological stations in Las Tunas were founded in 1965

With a Meteorological Center -founded in 1992- and two stations in the cities of Las Tunas and Puerto Padre, this province has fully fulfilled its mission of keeping the people and the authorities of the territory informed about the main atmospheric and climate events.

Meteorology station in Las TunasLas Tunas, Cuba.- So far, the effectiveness of the predictions is more than 91 percent, a figure above the national average; but it could be better if the cruel blockade of the United States against Cuba did not exist, which has also had a great impact on the activity.

The entity's deputy technical director, Alexey Moreno Borges, explained that the Institute of Meteorology has limitations to access equipment and devices that promote high reliability in terms of data collection of the different variables.

“We do not have access to free trade to acquire meteorological instruments to replace those that have been in operation for many years. For example, the two stations in the Las Tunas territory were founded in 1965, many years ago.

“Automatic stations are widely used in the world as well. Through research projects, Cuba has gained access to some; however, in several cases, their arrival in our country has not been possible, precisely because of this long-term policy.

Meteorology has no borders since the exchange of information between nations in the same area is common, which is why computers with better Internet connectivity are required to study global models. That is also affected.

Next June, the hurricane season will begin for the area of the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico. Radars, the Internet, and certain instruments are the eyes of meteorologists to tell where the center of the storm is, how it is moving, the strength of the winds ... For Cuba, it is also difficult to acquire this technology.

However, the national territory stands out for having great coverage in terms of square kilometers with the eight active radars that monitor the provinces and adjacent seas, and that is an achievement of Cuban Meteorology, despite the failed policy that tries to isolate the country of everything and everyone.
