President Miguel Diaz-Canel urged on Wednesday to shake off inertia, banish bureaucracy, eliminate obstacles and overcome self-satisfaction, to make accelerated and sustained progress in the consolidation of socialism in Cuba.

Havana, Cuba.- While presenting a report of his administration during the tenth ordinary session of the National People’s Power Assembly (Parliament), the last of the ninth legislature, the Cuban president called for creative and innovative work to promote the actions implemented for national development.

In his speech, Diaz-Canel noted that the current legislature of the parliament completed the most extensive legislative schedule since the approval of the Constitution, in 2019, even in the midst of the intensification of the United States blockade, and in the context of the global economic crisis and the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This included the approval of the Family Code, preceded by a broad popular debate, as well as the successful holding of People’s Power municipal elections.

The head of State highlighted the intense work carried out by Cuban deputies during the last few days, which allowed lawmakers to approve four important laws to promote development and overcome the challenges of a blockaded economy, as well as our own mistakes.

He pointed out that the Economic Plan for 2023, approved on Tuesday by the National Assembly, defines the objectives to make more effective and rapid progress for that purpose.

Diaz-Canel also stressed the need to achieve a gradual but sustained increase in foreign currency incomes to solve the existing macroeconomic imbalance, which is expressed in inflation, and shortage of supplies, among other aspects that affect the population’s quality of life.

In this regard, he urged to work, innovate, strengthen the circular economy and achieve the development of the socialist state enterprise so that it fulfills its role.

The Cuban president also defined as a priority for 2023 the care of vulnerable people, subsidies, with a non-welfare approach, among others, to promote social development.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Wednesday expressed his huge dissatisfaction for being unable to achieve, as head of State, the results for the people's much-needed prosperity.

On the last day of the tenth Ordinary Session of the National People’s Power Assembly (Parliament), the president did acknowledge that he is confident in collective leadership and ratified that he remains a faithful champion of the agreements reached during the 8th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba.

At Havana’s International Conference Center, Diaz-Canel said that this year was marked by hardships such as the Hotel Saratoga explosion, the fire in the Matanzas Industrial Zone (west), and the impact of Hurricane Ian in western Cuba.

He added that this compels us to grow, has taught us a lesson, and prompts us to calmly take step by step. He also assessed how principles, history, and the people’s support increase the force and confidence in victory.

The president noted that his administration has been characterized by the fulfillment of constitutional precepts, the respect for the law and the people’s interests, and its constant promotion of citizen activation mechanisms and people’s involvement in all spheres.

In his opinion, during his administration, he insisted on the importance of listening to people’s demands and ruling accordingly and the significance of science and the assistance of experts and scholars in the improvement of democratic instruments.

Diaz-Canel underscored that during this period, several programs to fight economic hardships were implemented, some about food sovereignty, the strategy to achieve the stability of the national power grid, and the curb of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also spoke about the creation and promotion of social plans to reduce inequalities and vulnerabilities and assured that each law approved by the Cuban Parliament will be more legitimate as long as more people intervene in their drafting. (PL)
