Sancti Spíritus, Cuba.- Alberto Eirín explained to the press that the outlook now is very different from the same period last year, as the dams of the territory reported this week about 900 million cubic meters of water more than on the same date last year.
The figure largely shows the runoff caused by the rainfalls left by Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and forces to take extreme protection measures in light of Subtropical Storm Alberto, which is approaching western Cuba.
For this reason, INRH specialists have adopted hydrological prevention measures such as opening of floodgates in the reservoirs that require it, mainly the Zaza dam, which has a large capacity with 1.02 billion cubic meters of water.
This week, all 242 dams in Cuba accumulated an average of 83 percent of their capacity, INRH President Inés María Chapman told the National News Agency. (PL)
