PCC Second Secretary Jose Ramon Machado Ventura also participated in the event, which took place in La Demajagua farm, the venue of the sugar mill of the same name, where Carlos Manuel de Cespedes proclaimed the beginning of the first war for independence and the abolition of slavery in Cuba on October 10, 1868.
A message was read before more than 5,000 participants in the national ceremony and addressed to the future generations. The message was contained in a capsule that was kept in the tomb of the last 'mambi' soldier, Juan Fajardo Vega, at the Cacahual Mausoleum, in Havana.
