Havana, Cuba.- Dorta, who heads the Cuban Central Laboratory of Cerebrospinal Fluid Analysis (LABCEL), described as wise the research carried out by his colleague, Dr. Calixto Machado, who made possible to establish the legal bases for the definition of brain death (BD).
Thanks to Machado and the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Resolution 90 of the Ministry of Public Health could be adopted. The document is coherent to diagnose BD and is very useful for the development of organ transplants, he said.
We are an example for many nations that have not yet legally clarified this issue, Dorta pointed out.
Dorta, who is attending the 8th International Symposium on Brain Death and Disorders of Consciousness, noted the achievements of the institution, which has been described as excellent and a national reference, and its awards, including the National Prize from the Cuban Academy of Sciences.
