The Juan Sáe dam was not much benefit from May rains

The precipitations in May in Las Tunas were considerable, breaking a record, with 150 percent about the average, registering an accumulated 218.6 millimeters of the historical value of 145.7, from the beginning of the humid period throughout the national territory.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Mirtha García Rojas, delegate of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) in the province, told the Cuban News Agency that the 23 dams managed by the organization increased their volume of stored water by 15 million cubic meters until the end of the month, which represents a 10 percent increase.

With a capacity of more than 350 million m³ of the vital liquid throughout the province, Las Tunas showed an increase in rainfall from the second decade of May, especially in the municipalities of Jobabo and Jesús Menéndez.

The Juan Sáez reservoir is located in “Jesús Menéndez,” the largest of its kind in the entire Las Tunas geography, with a storage capacity of 112 million m³, although -on this occasion- it was not much benefit.

García Rojas meant that this dam is only at 17% of its filling capacity, which has forced it to restrict its use for protecting the supply to the population and industry.

The meteorological stations and the INRH rainfall network show an increase in rainfall conditions, with the highest indices in the southern zone that closed with figures above 230 mm and the center with 226, which favored El Rincón, the main source of supply to the provincial capital, which is now close to completing its 20 million storage capacity.

Alexey Moreno Borges, deputy technical director of the Provincial Meteorological Center, explained that due to the scenario of this stage, in the days after the 10th of May, the rains were numerous with several significant and locally intense records encouraged by the presence of troughs in medium and high levels, a context that must be maintained in the coming months.

Las Tunas is one of the driest provinces in the country, with a rainfall average of only about 1,038 mm annually, so rains of this period are welcomed due to their necessary use in the socioeconomic life of the territory.
