The Foreign Ministry of Pakistan reaffirmed its traditional position of support for Cuba in the face of the genocidal economic blockade of the United States government against Cuba more than half a century ago, diplomatic sources stressed Saturday.

Islamabad.- The Additional Secretary of the Americas of the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan, Aftab Ahmad Khokher, who also serves as general director of the Foreign Service Academy, recently received the Cuban ambassador to Pakistan, Gabriel Tiel Capote.

The diplomat delivered a copy of a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba in which it exposes the threat of the new aggressive step of the United States to implement Chapter III of the Helms-Burton Act and its nature of extraterritoriality.

Aftab Ahmad Khokher reaffirmed the traditional position of Pakistan in support of the resolution that Cuba presents each year at the UN that demands the end of the long US blockade against this island and was interested in knowing details of the new aggressive step of Washington against Cuba.

Both parties also discussed different topics on the bilateral and international agenda.

So far not applied, Chapter III of the Helms-Burton Act seeks, among other objectives, to file lawsuits against companies and foreign citizens who have invested in alleged US properties nationalized in Cuba.

On January 16, the Department of State of the United States decided to suspend the application of the aforementioned article for only 45 days, instead of the usual six months, in the intensification of the siege against Cuba.

Through this mechanism, Washington arrogates the right to promote a trial against investors from third countries who invest in Cuba on nationalized properties after the triumph of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959.

The application of the previous article had been suspended by the previous US administrations given the damages that would imply its implementation, not only for Cuba but also for the United States and allies such as the European Union. (PL)
