The recovery work is continuing Tuesday in Havana after the recent devastating tornado which caused four deaths, 195 injuries and severe material damage in several municipalities.

 

Havana, Cuba.- During a new meeting of the Council of Ministers this Monday evening, the Cuban President, Miguel Díaz-Canel, called to intensify the attention to the population and urged to collect the experiences left by the climatic phenomenon to incorporate them into prevention and disaster plans.

For his part, the Head of the National Civil Defense Staff, Ramón Pardo, explained that priority is given to sanitation and debris collection in the city.

Besides, he indicated that once the losses have been accounted for, the distribution of resources to supply the population' basic needs will begin as soon as possible.

Regarding the restoration of electricity service, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Raúl García, said it is expected to be resolved next Thursday.

The main material affectations are focused on 10 de Octubre, Regla, Guanabacoa and San Miguel del Padrón municipalities, where total and partial house collapses are reported, trees fall and posts of the electric and telephone lines.

Regarding housing, the Minister of Construction, René Mesa, confirmed that the greatest damage is in building roofs, which are still evaluated to begin the delivery of resources to those affected.

The first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Havana, Luis Antonio Torres, detailed that so far the number of damaged houses amounts to 1,238, of which 123 are total collapses and 625 are partial.

He also explained that 224 houses have completely lost their roofs and 124 have been partially damaged. Since Monday morning, the people and workers of the construction, hydraulic and communal resources sectors and the Etecsa Telecommunications Company have been working in recovering those areas, supported by the Armed Forces and the mass organizations of the country.

CUBAN PEOPLE RECEIVE SOLIDARITY MESSAGES AFTER STRONG TORNADO

Solidarity message from President Daniel OrtegaSolidarity groups with Cuba and countries of Latin America and the Caribbean sent solidarity messages to Cuba after the tornado which shook Havana where recovery efforts are being carried out Tuesday.

Ecuador's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, on behalf of the people and the National Government, expresses its sorrow to the people and the Government of the Republic of Cuba for the unfortunate loss of human life, hundreds of injuries and material damage caused by the tornado, according to an Official Statement.

For its part, El Salvador's Permanent Table for Risk Management expressed its confidence that the unity of the Cuban people and the solidarity of friendly countries will allow the country to rise soon from this sudden and powerful blow of nature.

The Nicaraguan government sent a message signed by President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo, in whose text it transmits to Cuba "all our affection in this day of difficulties and losses."

The members of the Bolivarian Circle Yamileth López, from Costa Rica, also transmitted their respect and affection to the Cuban people in Havana.

In a brief statement, the Panamanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its solidarity with the families of the fatal victims, "and trusts that the renewed hope shared with the Cuban pilgrims who participated in World Youth Day 2019 will contribute to overcoming this tragedy, the result of the onslaught of nature."

CUBAN HOSPITAL PAYS ATTENTION TO ABOUT 20 TORNADO VICTIMS

Health authorities of the Calixto García hospital in Havana offered Tuesday details of the state of 19 people who have received care in that institution after injuries suffered on Sunday during a strong tornado.

According to the director of the medical center, Edilberto González, four patients remain in serious condition and with a reserved prognosis, given the complexity of the injuries.

The other patients show a stable and favorable evolution, the doctor told the national television, who highlighted the work of the multidisciplinary team responsible for assisting the victims of the phenomenon which caused four deaths and nearly 200 injuries, in addition to extensive material damage in several Havana municipalities.

Osvaldo Jiménez,deputy director of Emergency and Serious Patient Care, told Prensa Latina that the injuries are concentrated in the limbs, soft tissues, thorax, abdomen and skull.

Some of those patients expressed their gratitude for the care received at the Calixto García hospital, where at first more than 30 people were treated, and shared their experiences of the tragic day.

According to young man Osmani Garcia, the tornado surprised him on the street, while Mercedes Pedroso recalled the strength of the winds and its impact on the houses.

Electrical workers from Sancti Spíritus will contribute to recovery in HavanaSANCTI SPÍRITUS WORKERS TO SUPPORT RECOVERY IN HAVANA

Sancti Spíritus.- The Electric Company of the central province of Sancti Spiritus will support the recovery in several municipalities in Havana, affected by the passage of a devastating tornado last Sunday night, its director general reported Tuesday.

According to Carlos Misael Rodríguez, who heads the entity, six construction and assembly brigades and two work groups will work in Havana, while six specialized technicians will rehabilitate the electrical service.

The reinforcements will also have a specialist in health and safety at work.

More than half of the nearly 60 workers will directly help restore electricity in the city' s neighborhoods damaged by the weather phenomenon, Rodríguez stressed.

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS TO JOIN RECOVERY EFFORTS IN CUBA

The President of the Cuban Federation of University Students (FEU), Raúl Alejandro Palmero, on Tuesday announced that the Cuban youth, by their own will, will join the recovery works of the affected areas in Havana after the passage of the tornado.

"All our solidarity and encouragement for the families of the victims, the injured and those who lost their goods," the student leader said in front of the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) Raúl Castro, President Miguel Díaz-Canel and more than 30,000 young people at the stairs of the University of Havana, prior to the beginning of the parade of torches.

José Ramón Machado Ventura, second secretary of the Central Committee of the PCC, and other Cuban authorities also participated in the traditional walk taking place in Cuba to pay tribute to National Hero José Martí

Palmero also ratified the new generations' commitment with the continuity of the Cuban Revolution that is celebrating its 60th anniversary, he noted.

He highlighted Cuba's achievements reached in six decades of socialist government, as well as its resistance to the aggressions and the U.S. economic, commercial and financial blockade.

The student leader reiterated the Cuban university students' support to Venezuela and its president, Nicolás Maduro, before the attempted coup d'état in that South American country.

He finally called for popular participation in the February 24 referendum to ratify the new Constitution of the Republic. (PL)
