A statement from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced on Saturday that Italy is supporting Cuban efforts to cope with the damage caused by a tornado that hit Havana.

Havana, Cuba.- A press release states that the people and government of Italy allocated 122,700 dollars to the WFP for the purchase of 45 tons of vegetable oil.

This food will be distributed on the island as part of an operation to assist 9,755 families severely affected by the recent tornado in Havana.

This delivery is added to 245 tons of rice and beans from food pre-positioned by the WFP in the country to contribute to food security and nutrition of the population in disaster situations.

This WFP operation is part of the Action Plan launched by the United Nations System in Cuba (SNU) to respond to national priorities in the recovery of families and communities in the aftermath of the killer wind storm.

At the ceremony to deliver the oil held at the Distribution Loading Center in Old Havana, Carlos Fidel Martin, an official of the Foreign Trade and Investment Ministry, conveyed the gratitude of the Cuban authorities to the Italian government.

The EF4 tornado on a scale of 5 that hit the Cuban capital on January 27, 2019 injured nearly 200 people and destroyed or severely damaged nearly 8,000 homes. (PL)
