The Nicolás Guillén Foundation in Las Tunas materializes the poet's's maxim: "You have to have will."

The provincial branch of the Nicolás Guillén Tunas Foundation (FNG in Spanish) ratified in 2023 a coherent work for the defense of our sovereignty and identity, in compliance with the Cuban cultural policy.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Several socio-cultural projects, consolidated under its aegis, brought to schools, communities, and different spaces, the best of our artistic and literary work, contributing to the formation of values. A creative writing course, art appreciation workshops, gatherings, clubs and other initiatives maintained an active and varied program.

The Festival of Roots and Traditions (the FNG's most important event here), which included the scientific colloquium Presencia de Guillén, provided an approach to Japanese culture and was attended by prominent local and foreign intellectuals. In the context of the assembly, the actress Verónica Hinojosa also announced that the next chapter will be dedicated to Costa Rica, and work is already underway for its solid development.

During the meeting, the participants also discussed specific topics on the institution's agenda, including the importance of alliances, the formation of identity, support for young people, articulation with the University of Las Tunas, and projections for the current year.

Among the novelties for 2023 was the first edition of the literary prize for review or author, entitled Prosa de Prisa, organized by the Sensemayá project and co-sponsored by several cultural institutions. The writer and editor Argel Fernández Granado shared with those present his joy at the birth of this competition and its importance for the promotion of artistic and literary criticism, so necessary in these times.

For her part, Dr. Mayra Acebo highlighted the consolidation of the IdentiTunas project, whose results merited the CITMA 2023 Prize, awarded - as its name indicates - by the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment, in the territory. Scientific actions are also an important part of the work carried out here by the FNG. The Nicolás Guillén Chair of Studies is an example of this, as it contributes to revealing the contributions of the author of Sóngoro Cosongo.

The La Jungla gallery, one of the fixed spaces of Las Tunas headquarters of the Guillén institution, also maintained during the past year the exhibition of several exhibitions of plastic arts, with the participation largely of the artistic vanguard of the territory.

Likewise, the projections towards the community were extended, taking spaces such as La Paloma de Vuelo Popular to the Rita Longa pedagogical school, an initiative that, according to Marina Lourdes Jacobo, president of the provincial branch of the FNG, intends to continue expanding its diapason and reach more places every day, with the participation of students, teachers and invited creators.

She also highlighted the organization's involvement in events of great significance such as the 31st International Book Fair, the Industry and Commerce Fair - held in December at the Hotel Tunas - and the Cucalambeana Day. This last event hosted, for example, the Recital de Mujeres Decimistas and the Coloquio Iberoamericano de la Décima, which involved prestigious researchers, writers, and artists in general.

During the summer, the institution also offered the public a variety of proposals, grouped in the project Abre La Muralla (Open the Wall). Thus, different actions approached the manifestations of art, research, the gender perspective, and even the protection of the environment.

On the other hand, in the framework of the assembly, Professor Yury García Fatela acknowledged the support of the provincial branch named after the National Poet to the young creators who are part of important projects and exemplified with the literary workshop Cucalambé, which he leads.

An emotional moment of the balance was the recognition of people and institutions with outstanding work around the FNG, including Yury García Fatela, Dr. Mayra Acebo and Dr. Aleida Best, the Provincial Centre for Books and Literature, the Provincial Support Unit for Culture, the Provincial Council of Plastic Arts and the young writer Raúl Leyva Pupo.

The Citma award was also officially presented to the master Eyexi Ricardo, who -in co-authorship with Dr. Marina Lourdes Jacobo and Dr Rafaela Macías- examined in depth the work of the provincial branch of the FNG and its contributions to the cultural development of the territory.

With these and other fruits of its labor, this institution in Las Tunas materializes the poet's maxim: "Hay que tener boluntá" ("You have to have will"). Hence, the results honor -in terms of quality and systematicity- the legacy of the Cuban poet, journalist, and political activist Nicolás Guillén.
