Havana, Cuba.- According to Prensa Latina news agency, Jorge Peña and Rolando Vergara returned to the Caribbean island along with their families on Friday, with the satisfaction of the fulfillment of their duty. Cuba maintains that both carried out their mission during their stay in the U.S. in full compliance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.
"I categorically reject the unjustified expulsion of two officials from the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the UN and the tightening of movement restrictions on diplomats and relatives," wrote Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Twitter.
According to the U.S. State Department, Cuban diplomats were involved in "activities that threaten the national security of that country," which was roundly denied by the island's foreign minister when he condemned the expulsion decreed by the U.S. government.
Rodríguez described as "vulgar slander" the accusation that they carried out acts incompatible with their diplomatic status. (RHC)
