The rainfall recorded in Las Tunas during the recently ended September exceeded the historical average for that month, with a total of 157.1 millimeters, which means an important sign for the province, which is already engaged in the cold planting program of various crops.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- That figure represents 16.8 millimeters more than the historical average, especially since the greatest amount of rainfall was accumulated in the last five days.

All this is encouraging, because Las Tunas is the province where it rains the least in Cuba, with an average of 1,038 millimeters annually, and only two percent of the arable land is benefited with irrigation systems.

On the last day of the ninth month, heavy downpours fell in the municipalities - in the city of Las Tunas 130 millimeters were recorded - unusual events in this eastern territory, except when it has been strongly hit by weather events.

Although the rains have saturated the soils, the reservoirs have not raised much the amount of water collected, since of 39 percent of the filling capacity at the beginning of September, they accumulate now 46 percent, according to the Delegation of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources in the province.

The municipalities with the best situation in their dams are Colombia, Amancio, Majibacoa and Manatí, above 50 percent of their storage capacity.

El Rincón, the main source of supply for the territory, which provide water to the provincial capital, has a very favorable situation, a guarantee to face the dry period, which begins on November 1.
