21st anniversary of 26 Digital

Another year has gone with the whirlwind of haste. Now it's not exclusive to the Editorial Board or "the people of the Internet." It flies higher, until reach phones, computers, tablets, and whatever signal is nearby.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- 26 grew a lot since March 15, 2000, when it arrived in cyberspace and struck our souls forever; it was the collective's greatest success and it marked a milestone for the challenges of journalism in this newspaper, the province and the country. The memories of so many moments of tension and joy are still alive.

Giant steps and leaps, with technological limitations that never meant a setback, on the contrary, they were driven by the passion of knowing on the web the printed weekly of Las Tunas, its main ink and paper spokesperson, at a time when the network of networks was a strange word for most; and the Cuban press was beginning to give practically the primary glimpses of a media that was revolutionizing the world and the modes of communication.

And there 26 Digital was born! With a reduced number of reporters, photographers, and proofreaders, who learned on the go about the diary and the conquest of an incipient -almost nil- digital newsroom. There we were; we and that virtual Cactus tuna carrying on the web the work of a province also in development. It was the bridge –still is- that united and attracted the people from Las Tunas scattered across the continents.

It relieved nostalgia for local collaborators and aid workers in multiple nations. It narrowed the paths that kept Elián González's father's dreams of returning him home. It stood alongside friends and international organizations that defended the cause of the Cuban Five.

It never silenced any event of national or territorial importance ... in short, it was an avid and virtuous sentinel from the day it transported its messages and photos on the Internet's cordon of fire, thanks to the tenacity of this team called 26, clinging to give it life with their sleepless nights and constant improvement.

On this 21st anniversary, all the candles are lit. It means feeling the healthy pride of testifying that www.periodico26.cu has an average of approximately three thousand visits per day, but before the site fell, in the last months of last year, the figure exceeded 20 thousand. Tell ourselves that we are going for more when from the statistics of Twitter we receive the hugs of its more than 10 thousand followers.

A birthday that represents making a better, creative, immediate, truthful journalism, of interest and public good; ours, when verifying that the publications have a greater reach than 117 thousand users and an average of 168 thousand interactions. Or keep frenzied updates and news on its social media profiles, due to the faithful commitment to its cyber readers, who reach 10,583 followers on Facebook, not counting those who give a like or share the posts.

In these 21 years of turning hypermedia journalism into a solid tool for disseminating diverse content, with the use of multimedia and the advantages of web codes and languages, 26 has become the very essence of the goals and dreams of a group that permeates its daily breath of being from Las Tunas, it takes advantage of the feasibility of technologies, perfects its media management and has been the recipient of multiple national and provincial awards and recognitions.

One more calendar ... and the promise maintains the color of passion, certainty, and commitment; nuances of the faces, hands, footprints, and actions of the people. This website of the press in Las Tunas, Cuba, has grown a lot. There is no boasting. We carry the same rush of love and that giant bet of the first-born day: to navigate cyberspace with the truth. We are #26, #AquíNoSeRindeNadie, #EstoEsBaraguá. Joy and emotions are alive.
