Las Tunas, Cuba.- The first professional group of the scenic arts created in the territory used mixed-technique puppets, whose preparation includes natural resources such as seeds, snails, scourers and others, in clear reference to our land.
The cast includes actors Yosvany Maceo (Jíbaro), Mayelín Batista (Cristi), Frank Herrera (Beto), Lisandra Rivero (Rita) and José Ramón Moreno (Bigote). In the case of the latter, he also served as artistic director, readjusting the theatrical speech previously worked by Emelia González (current general director) and Luis Ricardo Faura (former artistic director and in charge of the design of puppets, scenery and costumes).
Yosvany Maceo, who graduated in May with a version of that work, expressed on the experience accumulated from his interpretation of the Jíbaro Dog, extracted from a tale of Russian literature: "We work hard because the manipulation is complicated and our body must get used to it, but I am satisfied. In this staging, in addition to working with puppets, the actors went on stage, dancing and defending our traditions. My character to enter the house to eat Cristi (the hen) had to impersonate other characters and that was a beautiful challenge," said the young actor.
Several talking animals have enriched the repertoire of the puppeteer group since 1971. Pigs, owls, crabs, butterflies, ducks, among others, have illuminated the eyes of thousands of children and adults during the performances, which have not stopped despite the vicissitudes faced with the restoration of the headquarters.
For the performing arts specialist Alberto Carlos Estrada Segura, "Jíbaro is the eternal struggle of good against evil, reflecting the importance of the union to win and also the metaphor of its interpreters to tell us that they want this to be the first drop of the immense ocean of spiritual wealth that they intend to continue creating."
Other members of "Los Zahoríes" are currently working towards an upcoming premiere: Story of a broken town, in which the actresses Ana Rosa Díaz Naranjo (Albita, with more than 20 years in the theater group), Leonor Pérez Hinojosa and María de Jesús.
