It was a night at the beginning of November 2007 and everyone in the room was aware of living a famous day: it was not for less. We had the presence here of the National Ballet of Cuba and a repertoire conceived for the local public.
From that occasion, perhaps listening to the applause, sometimes loud and sometimes softer, but persistent, like waves, Alicia created a very special relationship with this region. Jorge Smith, who is sad for her departure, tells me now that "she really liked the pie that my sister and I made. Every time I went to Havana, I came to visit her at the Grand Theater with one specially made for her.
"I remember that Miguel Cabrera, the historian of the National Ballet, once told me that he did not understand Alicia's relationship with Las Tunas. It was very unique. She brought up this cactus land in conversations that had nothing to do directly. This space of Cuba remained very deep in her memories ".
She visited The Balcony of Easter Cuba years before, in 1987, and received the status of Illustrious Guest of the city. Then, she visited us with the company in 2007, after a long silence. Then, she was awarded the City Shield and the reproductions of the Vicente Garcia Machete and El Cucalambé Pen. The highest distinctions of Las Tunas, all for her.
She returned in 2012. They say she found memorable the ride that we gave her. Likewise, she enjoyed, a lot, the tribute concert that brought together violins, guitars, and chords from Mariachi Tunas. Everything, to entertain her.
Thanks to Alicia, to her love, we were a branch of the International Ballet Festival of Havana. Besides, her management was decisive for us to be visited by prestigious artists such as Cristina Hoyos (Spanish dancer) and her company.
Much of her and her spell remain in those who met her during those tour dates. She goes around, the visit that could not be completed because the plane was delayed and the great diva had to return from the José Martí airport to her house, sending a warm greeting to us because returning, it was always a pleasant possibility.
Her stays were brief, but extremely intense. A story that deserves to be told in depth and that now, when she is not there, they leave the sweet taste of friendship when it becomes reciprocal love, and makes us part of the passage of a life.

Alicia Alonso, beautiful legacy in Las Tunas
Written by Esther De la Cruz Castillejo"The applause of the inhabitants of Las Tunas remind me of the waves of the sea." That was confessed by the eternal Prima Ballerina Alicia Alonso as she descended from the hand of Jorge Smith from the stage of Las Tunas theater.
