Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning

China on Wednesday denounced the abuses, human rights violations, and arbitrariness against the people detained in the prison that the United States maintains in Guantánamo, a portion of Cuban territory illegally occupied.

Beijing.- In her daily press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning criticized that prisoner abuse scandals have erupted in the Guantánamo prison for more than 20 years, which, she said, have aroused great outrage in the international community.

Mao recalled that the United States has repeatedly promised to close the Guantánamo prison. To date, dozens of people are still detained there, only a few of whom have been legally charged or convicted.

The Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson was responding to a report by the United Nations special rapporteur on protecting human rights while countering terrorism, who after assessing the US military prison in the Cuban territory illegally occupied in Guantánamo, concluded that its closure is a priority due to the injustices committed there.

The Chinese diplomat also referred to the existence of the so-called US “black prisons” in at least 54 countries and regions globally, saying they are a typical example of how Washington tramples on human rights. (PL)
