Las Tunas.- Its mission is to guarantee 70 percent of the total agricultural production, for which it has 235 thousand hectares -21 thousand dedicated to various crops and the rest to livestock-disseminated by the municipalities of Puerto Padre, Manatí, Majibacoa, Jobabo, Colombia and Amancio.
It comprises 12 basic business units, including an integral one for each of the aforementioned territories that, in addition to assuming all relevant activities, supports urban farms, basic units of cooperative production (UBPC), agricultural production cooperatives (CPA) ) credits and services cooperatives (CCS), of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP), based on its radius of action.
It is the result of the reorganization process of the Cuban agriculture and with just 31 months of birth, the entity of Las Tunas is already defined by many experts in the matter, inside and outside the borders of the Balcony of Eastern Cuba, as a company that advances, develops and consolidates.
ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERSPECTIVES
Alberto González Hernández, its general director, provides data and elements that prove the appreciation and project a promising future in such a peremptory performance.
Until the end of May, for example, the entity delivered to the industry four million 880, 100 liters of milk, an amount that represents 126 percent of the foreseen plan and a growth of 242, 300 in relation to the same stage of the previous calendar.
The company also sent to the factory two thousand 404 tons of beef, 100 percent of what was scheduled to date, while all its units progress in the creation of livestock modules, with different species of animals.
Of the state commissions, the only one that the company did not comply was the tomato due to causes beyond the control of the farmers, since at the stage it collected 620.8 tons of beans and advanced to the full phase of corn harvest in 66 tons.
Although in a global sense, foods from various crops are still insufficient with respect to demand, they show a resuscitation and sustained increases, above all, from the strengthening of productive poles, which will soon be joined to those that now are built in Fleitas (Manatí) and in the Alejo Tomás UBPC (Puerto Padre).
Alberto says that "if we produced 110, 200 tons of agricultural assortments in 2018, for this year we hope to reach 124 thousand, of them, 58 thousand of viandas (a starchy tropical root or tuber such as cassava, potato, taro and sweet potatoes, plantains are also included)".
BASES TO SUSTAIN PROMISORIES RESULTS
He explained that the successes are associated with the implementation of alternatives and the acquisition of new technology equipment, aimed at the recovery of livestock and areas covered with weeds to add them to the planting of food, grains, vegetables and fruits.
He said that the undertaken actions place his institution in better conditions to maintain a sustained and adequate supply of water and food to the animals during the period of greatest drought. He mentioned, among those, the pumping of water through the assembly of 30 solar panels, the operation of 660 windmills, the opening of 20 wells and more than 400 lagoons and artificial dams. All these actions have also allowed reducing, in a substantial way, the costly and inefficient supply by tank trucks.
After several years, the company managed to close 2018 with more than three thousand tons of stored hay and silage, in order to mitigate the negative effects of dry periods in the production of milk and beef.
Equally highlights the installation of 60 electric fences with more than 800 paddocks, which allows a more rational and efficient use of pastures, as well as the planting of more than 500 hectares of moringa, mulberry, tithonia and leucaena, among other species, capable to contribute around three percent of vegetable protein, included in the cattle's diet.
The provision that encourages the three thousand 200 workers to keep food production on the rise, is expanding its chances of success based on the support that the country has given it with essential material assurances.
In this regard, Alberto highlighted the recent incorporation of 18 Chinese tractors of the YTO brand of different powers, which together with the 15 existing Velarus, become important injection of modern equipment for the preparation of land and the cultivation of plantations.
The crops under irrigation are also advancing through the operation of 25 electric pivot machines that benefit more than 300 hectares and the assembly of small sprinkler irrigation systems in farms of individual producers dedicated to grains.
Thus, the Integral Agricultural Company of Las Tunas is part of the national strategy aimed at satisfying the population's food needs, contributing to reduce imports of rice, beans, cereals and raw material. It is also focused on strengthening the export program of charcoal - more than a thousand tons - and to explore possible markets to send vegetables, fruits and high-quality ecological fertilizer from earthworm humus abroad.
González Hernández stressed that "great are the challenges we have ahead in the economic and productive areas. Nevertheless, what has been achieved so far, including the contribution of one million 625 thousand pesos to the State budget and of them, 254 thousand to the government account of one percent for the local development, encourages us to continue working with impetus towards higher achievements."
