Las Tunas, Cuba.- However, this has not been the largest specimen of its kind that turned out to be a news here. Indeed, in November 1982, fishermen from Manatí municipality caught in Palancón area one whose weight amounted to... 9,590 pounds! It is taken for granted that it records as the largest of all those captured in Cuba at any time. The specimen reached such dimensions that it became necessary to use a crane to lift it.
The one I am talking about was found 20 feet deep about 400 meters from the shore, after getting entangled in one of the fishing nets installed in the area. The capture of that giant transcended the port geography to spread throughout the nation.
After being trapped in the net for 48 hours, the fish was towed 24 kilometers away from an Osla-type vessel, by fishermen Franklin Roque, Celso Rodríguez and Germán Justo. At noticing the impossibility of saving its life, and to avoid it further suffering, was killed by eight bullet shots.
The measurements made in situ certified that the colossal shark was 11 meters long, 15.3 feet in diameter, 5.5 feet in head width and 51 inches in mouth width. Four thousand 795 pounds of meat were extracted for consumption and its skin was used industrially.
However, the event was not only in its capture and in the dissemination of the news. A few days later a composer was visited by the muses and composed a guaracha related to the theme that radio stations were responsible for popularizing, performed by the group Los Caribeños.
