At first, she only replies with monosyllables, according to my source of information. Moreover, I am told that her words come out cold, like someone who is stuck with a truth that does not fit between her lips, or because it is easier to forget...
She was 19 when she met Michel. He was a bit older and wore a European style haircut. He had black eyes that scrutinized every girl on the road. Lisa (not named Lisa) loved him at first sight. They exchanged a few words and the chemistry between them sprouted, and then it was simpler.
A few months later, on vacation, they decided to visit Havana. The young girl prepared her best clothes and went to the capital with the dream of breaking dawn on the Malecón, on the lap of the awake city. She wanted to know beautiful places and climb La Rampa, 23rd Street, each piece denied by her reality as a village girl.
She does not stop at details, but she says that before a week, in which Michel confessed to her what the game was about, they went out to a very nice cabaret and there "her boyfriend" introduced her to a foreigner. He agreed on an amount of money with that man, of which she never knew, so that she would spend the night with the foreigner in the "rental house" of Michel´s family.
She remembers that in the month they were in Havana, she had to sleep with more than 10 men; all of them were old and repulsive. She had no other "meetings," because there were no candidates, which is why "her boyfriend" dared to tell her that she was not profitable for the business, that she was not very willing.
When she returned to Las Tunas, she pretended that nothing had ever happened. She did not tell anyone. Michel barely bought her a few clothes to start school and the rest of the money was spent on beers and expensive cigars.
Lisa comments that she was afraid that he would force her to prostitute herself here, in front of everyone's face, but in the first few months, he did not talk about it. Again, in July, he invented the same trip to the capital and although the girl refused, he almost dragged her along and set up the same business that last time.
Circumstances changed when Michel prohibited her from returning home in September. He suggested her to ask for a license at school because they needed money to buy a little house, and when his manners ran out, he locked her in the room where they stayed and beat her up.
The girl confesses that she felt used; somehow, she had justified the attitude of her "boyfriend" with a modern posture and lack of jealousy, in addition to the need for money and the harshness of life for the youth who want to enjoy.
She spent over a year "fighting" for Michel. He did not even bother to embellish the situation, or make promises. She says that he even found another "girlfriend" and confirmed to Lisa that their relationship was purely a content of work and that she didn't give him money, because she owed him everything he had spent on clothes, outings and rent.
Lisa suffered a lot before she got out of that life. She hid in a friend's house for several days and then got on a bus and returned to her village. Michel made many threats on the phone, he even said he would take her by the hair, but when the girl mentioned the police, he stopped calling her. She reveals that it was not simple, that at first, she was constantly afraid that he would show up at any moment...
I know that Lisa has tattooed on her neck, where her hair covers the phrase "Never Again." She does not explain its meaning, and I cannot stop making analogies in my head. Many details are missing from her story, the traces left by impotence, pain, ignorance... She does not speak too much, nor does she complain, nor does she articulate words of regret. I am afraid she carries much more inside than what she is able to tell. She assures us that in real life there are cruder experiences than in any tragic novel and that they are not sufficiently visible in our society. I definitely believe her.
