The Neonatology service of the Ernesto Guevara de la Serna Hospital has achieved superior results with respect to the past year, the result of hard work days and the experience of those who make their best effort to save the lives of newborns.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The infant mortality rate in children under 1 year of age in this hospital institution is maintained at around 2.3 per thousand live birth, and this year there are two fewer deceases than the previous one. Prematurity is the main cause of death.
Yodalys Cedeño Ramírez, head of the service, explains to 26 Digital that they had more than 1,500 entries this year with a general survival rate of 99.3 percent; which reaches 96.3 percent in children weighing less than 1,500 grams. "These indicators show excellence in work, taking into account that they need extreme care, especially the smallest," she says.
The most common conditions are premature birth, the high number of underweight infants and early-onset sepsis related to mother-acquired infections by urinary tract or vaginal. Those contracted in the neighborhood are also among the reasons for admission, as some newborns go home and then return with some infection.
"We have links with different specialties such as Nephrology and Ophthalmology. A national pediatric cardiology network operates to assist patients with cardiovascular disease and then a lifetime follow-up is performed or until that congenital malformation is corrected."
"We conducted a search of those who weighed less than 1,500 grams and were in ventilation, as part of the Retinopathy of Prematurity Program with a high resolution index. Babies receive laser treatment to prevent childhood blindness. "
neomatologia13The work of neonatologists does not end with the patient leaving the ward. "We make personal delivery of each child who was hospitalized with a critical morbidity to the basic health teams and pediatricians of the Primary Health Care (PHC) with the purpose of achieving an adequate control of these infants, since they have more risk of suffering diseases."
"In addition, we have a miscellaneous consultation and another of neurodevelopment, through which we follow up them during their first year of life, approximately," Yodalys said.
The specialist believes that the joint work with the PHC and the successful guidance of the Provincial Health Directorate had a very positive and decisive effect on the results of this 2018. "From the first link of the health system, which is the Doctor and Nurse of the Family Program, we draw strategies to prevent premature birth and maternal infections that lead to complications in the newborn.
"We used to receive children from the health areas in extreme conditions because their medical profile went unnoticed, however we have made advances in this sense and the infants arrive in better condition, at the same time we provide a higher quality assistance in PHC."
Professors and assistants train the residents in Neonatology. Nurses have a high professional level. However, for this 2019 it has been proposed raising the preparation through updating conferences on mechanical ventilation and the management of different conditions.
"Despite the achievements, we are never satisfied. We always try our best so the family and the society are given children with fewer complications and sequels, better intellectual quality and prepared to face life in the future."
