Jobabo, Las Tunas.- Now they are working in infrastructure; a ranchón in the crocodile breeding farm and another one in the area of the beach, near where the crossing through the swamp begins, the improvement of some parts of the road, the construction of a small pier in one of the estuaries, the conditioning of the biological station of Boca Jobabo, and the coordination of some logistics tasks.
This week everything must be ready for the accreditation of Monte Cabaniguán as a tourist route, confirmed managers of the protected area, which expedite everything to receive the specialists of Ecotur and the tour operator, who will assess whether the site has the conditions to receive this kind of tourism, which is characterized by exquisite service.
An interesting fact is that only 12 people can enter per day, in accordance with the strict measures for the conservation of the wildlife refuge, a key point in this modality of nature tourism.
"You must have a guide in the area, the infrastructure and transport in order, the site's historical review ready, to evaluate and control the waste of the products that are going to be used, sport hunting and fishing, i.e., to comply with what is legislated in protected areas," explained Yaimara Fuentes, specialist of the Ministry of Science Technology and Environment that attends that department in Las Tunas.
The itinerary that is initially proposed only includes a brief stay at the crocodile farm in Zabalo, a tour of the mangroves, bird watching and other species of flora and fauna characteristics of the site, and some demonstrations of the scientific activity that takes place there.
The opening of Monte Cabaniguán to tourism will give the opportunity to create the infrastructure conditions in the areas of Zabalo and Palo Seco to offer other services that generate income to the municipality, mainly exploiting potentialities in the sale of handicrafts, while it is thought that in the future extend the routes to the Monte and Sabana area, and include historical sites.
Now everything depends on what the workers and managers of Flora and Fauna can do to ensure that Monte Cabaniguán meets the requirements to shortly host the first wave of Russian visitors.
Opening Monte Cabaniguán to tourism is not only of significant commercial importance, but it is proposed to expose to the world the extraordinary values of the little-visited protected area, among which a mangrove ecosystem practically unaltered by anthropic causes that houses the best local population of Crocodylus acutus in wildlife, iguanas, waterfowl colonies. "This area serves as a refuge and food for migratory birds, and on the land, it has a savanna with palms and a large representation of species of the Copernicus genus," says the specialist.
To have a notion of the ecological wealth of Monte Cabaniguán, it should be noted that here, 9.40 percent of endemic species have been identified; hence the importance from the environmental point of view of the care and protection of this area, and of bringing those values to the world.
