Improving quality of Primary Health Care is top priority

The implementation and fulfillment of the work projections to rescue the foundational concepts of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program is one of the priorities of the Public Health Directorate in Las Tunas, for which it develops a broad action plan in the eight municipalities.

The 556 medical offices in the province work with one hundred percent of the staff; of the doctors, 505 are specialists in Comprehensive General Medicine (MGI) and the rest are residents in the specialty, without a doubt, one of the greatest strengths.

So far, 124 clinics have been constructively intervened. Of the total, 27 are in poor condition and 181 in fair condition; 144 have problems with the hydraulic system, and others have deficiencies in the structural conditions of privacy, lighting, and ventilation, which shows the magnitude to be faced to eradicate the insufficiencies.

Some weaknesses depend on the work of the professionals and affect the good performance of the program. The main trouble is the lack of systematicity in the frequency of visits by the professors of the Basic Work Group of the Health area to the medical office and the difficulties in the participation of the community to face the health problems of the neighborhoods.

In 2023, there is already a better interrelation between the different disciplines of the province for the development of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, which results in higher quality Primary Health Care, and that is key to consolidating such important work.
Likewise, work is being done on the reorganization of the Basic Work Groups with a minimum of 10 teams, and on increasing the reserves of certified MGI specialists, for whom master's degrees and diplomas related to their main management are designed.

The Provincial Health Directorate, together with other organizations and institutions, develops a process to improve the infrastructure of clinics with construction problems and adopts the necessary measures to solve the difficulties that depend on the work of professionals since the improvement of this program is vital to achieving optimal efficiency in Primary Care, which begins in the communities.
