Food production in Manatí

Several actions are undertaken to increase food production in the municipality of Manatí, according to the guidelines oriented by the Provincial Defense Council, taking into account the country’s economic and social situation due to the incidence of the COVID-19 disease.

Manatí, Las Tunas.- The president of that body, Manuel Pérez Gallego, was able to verify it during his tour of places linked to the activity, belonging to the sectors of Fishing, Agriculture, the Food Industry, and the sugar harvest.

At first, the leader visited the business unit of the Aquaculture Species Cultivation Station belonging to the Pescatún Fishing Company, where he appreciated the work of the group in breeding catfish and freshwater lobster ponds.

He also learned about the sowing of cyprinid fry (white and spotted tench and carps) for their cultivation in the reservoirs of the territory of Las Tunas and their subsequent commercialization to the people through fillets, croquettes, minced fish and other foods.

Aquaculture increases production

In addition, Pérez Gallego toured areas of the Orlando Venegas credit and services cooperative, in the community of Las Marías, with some 300 hectares planted with sweet potato, cassava, corn, peppers and rice; and the Paco Cabrera basic unit of cooperative production (UBPC), in La Guinea, in which he evaluated the compliance with sugar cane cutting and transfer.

At the Popular Council of Dumañuecos, Pérez Gallego visited the Luis Augusto Turcios Lima UBPC. There, they repaired two irrigation machines that were damaged that favor the production of more than 48 hectares of various crops; and also the 8 de Marzo canning factory, where various products such as tanned vegetables, sweet fruits in syrup and tomato puree are manufactured.
