embarazoLas Tunas, Cuba.- Osmara López Borrero, head of the Maternal and Child Section, explains to 26Digital that they carry out a differentiated work with the infertile couple in the territory. "There are around 79,991 couples, of which 10 percent may have infertility problems, so 7,999 would be in that situation. Of these, we have identified 6,841 in all health areas.

"The first consultation is offered in the doctor's office and then the specialized one in the centers of attention to the infertile couple, existing in all the municipalities. We also have a provincial center, located in the Colon Street of this city. The 95 percent of these couples have visited or exchanged with the basic Health team during the field visits."

According to the specialist there is an important group that presents problems, but at this time they do not want to conceive. Those who do want to do so can find assistance; currently, more than 150 pregnancies have been achieved.

"We prioritize this work not only for these people's satisfaction of having a child; but also for being a necessity for the conservation of our population, which is among the more aging in the country," she said.

At the same time they enable access to the Family Planning consultation in each health area. There couples receive guidance and undergo several studies before conception. They also have contraceptive methods to prevent unwanted pregnancies and abortions that can cause so much damage to the female reproductive system.

The greatest number of births occurs historically in the second half of the year. According to López, there is a plan of measures that includes the extension of the Maternity wards to support the increase in hospitalization.

"We have approximately three thousand pregnant women in the province and we have four places where birth and caesareans are performed: the hospitals Ernesto Guevara, Guillermo Domínguez, 14 of June and Luis Aldana Palomino. The medical teams have a greater number of members for attend to patients."

Low birth rate is a demographic phenomenon of multiple causes; which demands the interest and actions of all spheres of society. We must not forget that the reproductive process guarantees the continuity of future generations.
