The farmers of Las Tunas have the imperative to increase production

Appealing even more to all possible alternatives to achieve the proposed yields in the current cold season, the use of different means to remove the earth and the use of various methods to cultivate, are some of the actions that are carried out in this province in order to carve out a stage of an impulse to food production.

Despite the efforts, last December closed with a delay of 1,616 hectares to be planted, however, the farmers insist on complying with the agreed figures, because they know that this period is decisive to achieve close to 70 percent of the food that will be harvested this year, intended for direct marketing in the agricultural markets.

Reynaldo Brito Pérez, deputy delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture for various crops in Las Tunas, weighed the increase in the area destined for sowing with respect to the same period of the previous year and stated that among the prospects for January is to recover the gaps between plans and real and contribute more hectares than the reconciled ones for the month of February.

The farmers of Las Tunas have the imperative to increase production"To the 2,255 hectares to be sown in the month of January, the slopes of December will be added, so the application of science and technology in the entire agricultural sector should be a priority, to make good use of quality seeds, soils with better conditions and the use of biofertilizers, given the lack of chemicals and technological packages.” Likewise, he insisted on the need to use genetics to obtain species that guarantee higher yields and are more resistant to inclement weather.

The farmers of Las Tunas have the imperative to increase production, as this is a decisive stage for a slight rise in viands, grains, vegetables and fruits. At the same time, it is urgent to achieve self-sufficiency in some products such as chickpeas, taro, and other crops that still do not reach the necessary amounts and could very well respond to local demand.

Regarding the production of cassava, within the strategies of this sector is to enhance its yields, since it is not only for human and animal consumption but also works as an extender, since flour can be made from it, which can contribute to reducing wheat imports in the face of real contingencies.

"Water is a resource that so far behaves in a favorable way for sowing," Brito clarifies. The soils are still damp due to the rains of the previous months and in terms of seeds we have quality seed banks,” added the deputy delegate.

In spite of the tense situation in the fields, farmers work intensely to guarantee the cold season and achieve high yields by assuming various cultural attentions and the use of quality seeds. They aim to make possible to deliver this year to the inhabitants of this province the proposed per capita of 30 pounds of viands, vegetables and grains; much more now that the monetary ordering is implemented in the country and prioritizes, as never before, higher prices for those who work the land.
