COVID-19 in Las Tunas

Despite the 16 cases of COVID-19 confirmed today, the province ends the week (March 28 to April 3) with a positive balance compared to the previous one (March 21 to 27).

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Although it is early for a definitive assessment, this could be the result of the implementation of the measures adopted by the Temporary Working Group, which entered into force last March 29.

With yesterday's figure, it is the third time that Las Tunas has registered 15 confirmed or more, in one day in the entire pandemic period; the previous occasions were on February 11, 2021, 15; and March 15, 19. At the end of this week, 44 positives were accumulated, 12 less than in the previous one, even when 300 more PCRs were performed.

The municipalities of Puerto Padre, Colombia and Amancio maintain stability in their epidemiological situation. Five cases were registered in Manatí, one in Jobabo, and four in Majibacoa. The provincial capital reports the highest number, 34, although it decreases compared to the preliminary week.

When analyzing the situation in the confrontation with the disease, Dr. Gregory Pérez Héctor, Deputy Director of Health here, explained that 19 isolation centers operate in the territory in its different modalities: contacts, suspects, asymptomatic positives, and health workers who leave of the red area.”

Today, the teams work mainly in the control of outbreaks from the increase in population studies in the municipalities that confirm positive cases in recent days.

Actions continue throughout the province, including the evaluation of patients who come to consultations with acute respiratory infections, active inquiries, isolation of direct contacts, and strict monitoring of second-order contacts in the communities.

Since the beginning of the pandemic to date, more than 600 cases have accumulated with almost 37 thousand samples carried out, for a positivity rate of 1.6 percent. In the last 15 days, 102 cases were confirmed, 93 autochthonous, and the incidence rate is one of the lowest in the country.

More than 370 patients are admitted to the different isolation centers. Travelers from abroad also remain isolated, who undergo the PCR at the airport and on the fifth day of stay in the facilities set up here. "If it is negative, they go to the community to complete the 10-day restriction of movement," the manager said.

He also emphasized the care of infants and school-age infants, especially now that face-to-face teaching activities have stopped and the child must remain at home. "Parents should not allow their children to walk in the streets and play without the facemask."

Regarding the Molecular Biology Laboratory, he said that its start-up  soon will be of vital importance, because “it will allow a diagnosis within 24 hours and continue studies, mainly in places with open outbreaks and also in the 'areas in silence,' where we really do not know whether or not the SARS-CoV-2 virus is circulating.”

Pérez Héctor reiterated the need to comply with the new codes of life, which include the mandatory use of the facemask, physical distancing and handwashing.
