Cuba Debates Role of University for Inclusive Development

Havana.- The challenges of inclusive economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the innovative role higher education should play on it, are on the table today at the 10th International Congress, Universidad 2016. 

 

Today's activities of the event will include a keynote speech on that issue, by Argentine political scientist and sociologist, Atilio Borón, and the beginning of a Forum of Rectors from higher education institutions.

Such collateral event will facilitate the analysis of current and relevance issues for the universities, such as social responsibility, political science, technology and innovation, and importance of cooperation and development of international projects.

During the second day, the Congress, taking place at the Conference Center in this capital until Feb. 19 with the participation of about 2,500 delegates from about 60 countries, will also open several international workshops.

Among them are the 10th Workshop "University, Science and Technology," and 13th Advisory Board on Postgraduate in Latin America.

Under the motto "Innovative university for a sustainable human development," the event brings together more than 20 ministers and deputy ministers from different countries, as well as Nobel prizewinners, and executives of international organizations, such as the United Nations for Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Last night, after opening the meeting, Cuban Higher Education Minister, Rodolfo Alarcón, stated that universities are key institutions in the processes of production, dissemination, and use of knowledge.

According to the minister, higher education institutions are also fundamental in the great purposes of social development, inclusion and competitiveness, especially in the context of a globalized and interconnected economy.

For his part, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, Qian Tang, stressed that the issue of this event is in line with the 2030 Agenda adopted by the United Nations.

According to organizers, "Universidad 2016" exceeds this year the precedents in which scientific quality is concerned, as along to the large number of Latin American delegates, important number of Europeans and Africans, as well as some 90 American professionals, are attending this event.
