Genetic studies and specialized comprehensive care for women in reproductive age to achieve higher quality pregnancy are the main objectives of the Maternal and Child Program (PAMI) in Las Tunas.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Osmara López Borrero, head of this section of the Provincial Health Directorate, told the Cuban News Agency that the program exhibits satisfactory results and it aims to have a significant impact on improving the quality of pregnancy, through genetic studies to avoid possible malformations and risks for the baby.
The doctor added thae other fundamental aspect in which the PAMI works is related to the attention to infertile couples, through municipal and provincial studies, and the possibility that the pregnancy can be attended in the province until the stage of artificial insemination.
López Borrero explained that there is a multidisciplinary team, made up of specialists in gynecology, comprehensive general physicians, nurses and psychologists, working along with the families to obtain the final result: the conception of the baby.
She said that the other objective of the Program is the decrease of teen pregnancy; a coordinated work between Health, Education and the Federation of Cuban Women, directly with the family, taking into account that there is a group of pregnant teenagers.
´´We have Family Planning consultations in all of health areas, because it is necessary to provide comprehensive care not only for those who are already in the course of pregnancy, but for those who believe that the interruption is a contraceptive method.´´
Las Tunas has a life expectancy at birth of 79.28 years, the highest in the country together with the neighboring Holguín province, comparable to that of the countries with high human and social development.
