More than 2,680 births happened the province during the first semester of 2018, with an infant mortality rate of 2.6 per thousand live births, among the lowest in the country and much lower than the 4.8 registered in the same stage of the previous year.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Osmara López Borrero, head of the Maternal and Child section in the territory, explains to 26Digital that the main causes of death are congenital malformations, infections and preterm births.
No maternal deaths are reported to date, due to the excellent work of commissions for the attention to seriously ill patients, made up of professionals from different specialties, who guarantee the quality of care. In the pediatric ages, the death rates are also considerably reduced.
The advances in the indicators of the Maternal and Child Care Program (PAMI, by its Spanish acronym) are the result of a work strategy that starts in Primary Health Care. The national protocols of action in Obstetrics are implemented there, and the preparation of specialists in the use of predictive technologies of pathologies in the pregnancy allows adopting the most successful course of action.
"We have significantly reduced the number of caesarean sections, which are so prone to complications; in neonatal care we narrow the link with the health areas to achieve the proper follow-up of children, once they leave that service".
Nursing staff provides differentiated assistance to infants and pregnant women at high risk of complications. At the same time, the Medical Emergency System works. "The accompaniment of the Provincial Health Directorate in all processes is another of our strengths," López Borrero adds.
