The population aging and the increased obesity make diabetes a crucial issue for the world public health, said researchers in an article published by the health journal The Lancet.
The research collected data on 4.4 million adults from different regions to estimate the scope of the disease in age groups from 200 countries.
The research indicated that between 1980 and 2014, diabetes was more commonly found in men than women and also that the rate of the disease rose significantly in China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt and Mexico.
The lowest rates of the disease were found in European northeastern countries with tolls for age groups lower than 4 percent in women and six percent in men, in countries as Sweden, Germany, Austria, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Given the results, WHO director general Margaret Chan said that in order to halt the increase of diabetes cases we should redesign our daily life: have healthy meals, work out and balance the weight. (PL)
