The working group of the Maternal and Child Care Program (PAMI by its Spanish acronym) in the northern municipality of "Jesús Menéndez" reinforces the strategies to prevent pregnancy in adolescence, a health problem on the rise.

"Jesús Menéndez", Las Tunas.- Maritza Ingran Calderón, specialist of the Municipal Department of Prevention and Promotion of Health, explains that such actions aim to reverse this situation that affects the lives of those involved and society. "56 of the 259 pregnant women in the territory are teenagers."
"We have taken the schools the Family Planning consultation which include, among others, specialists in Gynecology and Obstetrics, Genetics, Nursing, Psychology. Last year we attended 96 percent of our girls individually. We have proposed to include boys too. "
The factors that affect this problem are several: some of these girls come from broken homes and unstable relationships with their parents. Others are victims of curiosity and overconfidence. Likewise, the change of attitudes in sexual matters has a significant influence; having a child without being married or having sex at an early age no longer represents the same stigma as in the past.
"By applying the surveys, we corroborated that there is still a lack of knowledge about Sexual Education; this age group is guided more by the criteria of their peers than by the family, and we also detected poor communication between children and parents," she says.
Adolescent pregnancy is today a concern in the province. The intention of the counseling and prevention activities is to make young people reflect on the importance of taking care of themselves, making responsible decisions, using planning methods, valuing themselves and drawing up a life project that makes them happy.
