Las Tunas, Cuba.- With the innovative technique applied by doctors Maricel del Busto García Chinea and Damaris Calvo Pérez, Second Degree specialist in Maxillofacial and First Degree in Orthodontics, respectively, began the surgical training with the doctors from Las Tunas regarding this pathology, which is included among the 10 most frequent congenital malformations in Cuba.
Maricel del Busto García Chinea, assistant professor and assistant researcher at the Eliseo Noel Camaño hospital, told Tiempo21 that there are various techniques, but this one offers within the immediate advantages that after the first 10 days of the intervention, the baby can breastfeed and breathe without problems.
This procedure constitutes an urgency in maxillofacial surgery and consists in fixing the tongue through a U suture so that it is in an advanced position, this will contribute to the growth of the jaw after solving the cleft palate.
García Chinea said that in about 18 months the patient returns to a normal state with a natural development, both for food, breathing and growth for further development.
The newborn Liovannys Jesús Reynaldo Álvarez, was born on January 16th at the Ernesto Guevara de la Serna General Hospital, and was diagnosed with Robin Sequence, with a micrognathia and glossoptosis with palatal cleft (mandible located backwards with the tongue stuck in the cleft palate), which obstructed the airway and kept it at high risk of death by hypoxia or anoxia.
After performing the surgery, physicians from Las Tunas are able to attend this type of medical emergency. Previously, the patients had to travel to Havana for follow-up depending on the number of interventions.
The congenital anomaly of Sequence Robin has an incidence in Cuba of one for every 8,000 babies and it occurs with greater frequency in the male sex. Worldwide, the nation is considered a pioneer in primary nasal repair and success depends on intervention in the first weeks of life.
