Many have been the transcendental moments that took place in the municipality of Majibacoa. However, none of them made hearts shudder with happiness, such as the inauguration on April 22nd, 1986, of the sugar mill with the same name of the municipality by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba.


Las Tunas, Cuba.- That morning, with its radiant sun, high temperature and human warmth, amid cheers and applause, the political leader congratulated those who built the most beautiful and complete sugar mill built by the Revolution. "And I dare to do it," he emphasized, "because I am sure that you will continue producing."


After 33 years of existence and in accordance with the results achieved in the 30 harvests carried out there, today we can affirm that the men and women of the sugar industry of Majibacoa, avoiding obstacles of all kinds, have asserted the confidence given by Raúl.

Majibacoa sugar millThat criterion is accomplished by the significant contribution to the national economy with one million 520,111 tons of sugar produced for life; and the fact of being among the five most efficient and productive sugar mills of the Island during the last campaigns.

At this point of the current harvest, Víctor Torres González and the men he leads know that their sugar mill hardly loses the status of the second largest producer in the country -about 66,000 tons-; nor the top place among the factories that contribute the most sugar over the plan (eight thousand tons).


Maintaining that dominance in a dispute in Las Tunas became difficult and complex due to the setbacks caused by the rains, the lack of cane and the problems with regular and rail transport, especially since February.
That is what really enhances the performance of all those involved in the harvest and make some people, both in the province and in the nation, wonder why the "Majibacoa" can and the rest cannot?

For José Caballero Carballosa, experienced Head of Maintenance and one of the main protagonists of the progress made, the key may be in strict compliance with the indications drawn up by Azcuba for the repairs stage and during the execution of the campaign.

"In the first case," he says, "as soon as grinding ends, we take stock of what happened, area by area, in which workers and specialists not only issue criteria on the causes and effects of the problems, but also suggest possible solutions.

"With this analysis, we set up the problem bank, from which the repair plan for each department is drawn up; we define the persons responsible for executing it and the compliance date. What follows next is the daily check of the task, a great deal of demand and control."
It is important to prepare the industry for a long period of production, as well as the prevention work that mechanics, technicians and specialists must do during the harvest.

"For me," Caballero says, "more than 90 percent of the successes are based on the quality of maintenance and the constant review of the equipment, so the highlight of us is the preventive work, because when you go ahead to the problems, these do not happen and then you work less. It is more efficient and produces more.

The specialist points out that "there are advocacy books in the areas, because if you do not write down the events that occur in your watch, how will you convey the problem presented. It is a system of integral work, which works with constant monitoring, since the harvest is a constant process. If the difficulties are not solved just in time, they can cause breakages of several hours."


Sugarcane fields in MajibacoaFor Alberto Escalona Ramírez, operations head there, what has been achieved in the campaign is the sum of many little things, since each front of the chain -industry, agriculture, automotive and rail transport, Azumat, Esazúcar and Tecnoazúcar-, all them contributed in greater or smaller measure.

He welcomed the support received from the managers and workers of the sector in the municipalities of Manatí, Jesús Menéndez, the Antonio Guiteras and Grito de Yara sugar mills, who supplied some 482 thousand tons of cane, of the 700 thousand so far processed by the sugar mill.

However, he acknowledged that in a certain period, it was possible to cut and throw more cane, but the objective was not achieved due to the negligence of the immediate chiefs because of the lack of discipline, organization and commitment of the members of some squads of sugarcane combine harvesters with the task.

As part of the agro-productive system of the locality, it satisfies to know that, in unison with the production, positive indices are obtained in the tasks of sugarcane recovery.

In this regard, Yoel Martínez Vargas, director of Attention to Producers Base Business Unit, said that from January to April, 357 hectares were planted, 184 more than planned, which puts the entity in a position to comply with the spring plan, up to one thousand 855.

Majibacoa is one of the territories where cane production grows in Las Tunas, not only through sowing, but also through the increased yield per hectare. It rose to 41.9 since the 35 tons reached in the previous harvest.

In other words, the production of the sweet and the grass go hand in hand, so that the future of the most important line of the economy of the Majibacoa municipality is guaranteed, where a sugar mill rises as an exquisite jewel of the effort and the sense of belonging as the key elements of the sugar production.
