Las Tunas province registered an infant mortality rate of 3.2 per thousand live births, below the national average, and an index of zero maternal death, at the end of the first semester of 2019.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- The compliance of the guidelines by the Ministry of Public Health (Minsap) made it possible for the municipalities of Manatí, Puerto Padre, "Jesús Menéndez", Majibacoa and "Amancio" to keep the infant mortality rate at zero.

This result was possible thanks to the guarantee of doctors and nurses in all primary care institutions; the operation since 2018 of a multidisciplinary commission for the care of pregnant women and children in serious condition; and the increase in the survival rate of newborns with low birth weight or in serious and critical conditions in the Neonatology service.

"The work with the preconception risk, and with the infertile couples in several health centers, as well as the decrease of pregnancy rates in adolescence are some of the lines of work projected by the specialists of the territory to consolidate the results during the second semester of the year," said Dr. Osmara López Borrero, director of the Maternal and Child Health Program (PAMI, in Spanish).
