"Jesús Menéndez", Las Tunas.- Maritza Ingram Calderón, specialist of the Municipal Department of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention, refers to 26Digital that from the group of 254 pregnant women in this territory, 38 are under 19 years of age; and five of them are between the ages of 12 to 14 years.
"In the same period of 2018, the 18 percent of total pregnant women belonged to this age group and currently 14 percent is registered, which shows a slight decrease.
"Today the municipality maintains favorable indicators in the Maternal and Child Program, as it does not present infant or maternal deaths. However, there are difficulties with low birth weight, and this is influenced by conceptions at an early age."
Educational work with girls and boys includes family dynamics, talks, audiences, face-to-face conversations ... At the same time; they increase the training of the staff of the doctor's offices and school institutions.
Ingram explains that "we try to make visible this social problem and, at the same time, we provide tools and knowledge to people to deal with. We have health promoters in schools, in addition to the work held in the Center for Orientation to Women and Family, and the support of several organisms."
"During the summer we met with the Community Working Group of La Herradura beach and there was no lack of analysis of this aspect among the many addressed issues."
With the beginning of the school year, the initiative to offer consultations to the students in the schools is resumed. "We name them 'friendly doctor´s offices', in which we carry out an evaluation of the adolescent and even, we indicate vitamin supplements for their proper development.
"Generally," she adds, "at that stage of life, families do not follow up on adolescents in the consultation; they only go to the doctor because of the appearance of any disease. It means that they do not know the weight, height or other elements essential in the evolution of the boy or the girl, so that they do not prevent possible sufferings ".
In these exchanges, students expand their knowledge about Sex Education. They are informed of the different contraceptive methods and the use of condoms, as well as the existence of the so-called "emergency pills", which can be used 72 hours after an unprotected sex.
Ingran insists on the importance of joint work to reduce pregnancy rates in this period, which implies dangers to the life of the baby and the mother. An important part of these females drop out of school and their parents take care of the child's livelihood.
Others decide to abort and their reproductive system is so damaged that years later they fail to get pregnant; situation that affects the birth rate. A sad reality, whose consequences go beyond the limits of the personal space to become a social issue.
