Historical issues related to Legal Medicine (LM) were debated on the last session of the 22nd Workshop and the 1st History Meeting of this medical specialty.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- An investigation –published in a book- revealed the existence of professionals from the branch from the pre-revolutionary stage in the province and after the triumph of 1959. However, the splendor of the LM began in 1981 with the Opening of such a service.

Alba Josefina Reyes, head of the Department of LM at the Guevara Hospital and one of the authors of the book, comments that Las Tunas is a pioneer in the specialty and the second to have a Toxicology laboratory in the country.

During the second day, a large space was dedicated to the specialty in Santiago de Cuba, which is linked to studies on events that occurred in that territory and important personalities.

LM: BEYOND A VIOLENT DEATH

"The population normally knows the work of legist doctors in violent acts or deaths, but that is only one third of the work content," said Dr. Víctor Manuel Rodríguez Guevara, president of the Cuban Society of the specialty.

The professionals who study this discipline go beyond the autopsy of the body. They are responsible for examining victims of violence in all its manifestations, others related to judicial situations with a psychiatric disorder or those who become ill while they remain in prison.

Alba Josefina Reyes explains that "we have dedicated ourselves to the teaching and research sphere and to help the bodies of Justice. Hence, there is a close relationship with the Ministry of Home Affairs (Minint), the Prosecutor's Office and the Court. We apply medical knowledge and other sciences in favor of social justice. "

Moreover, she adds that "we are not assisting doctors, but we cure society of the scourge of crime."

According to the specialist, almost all the work is related to the aggressions, so that within the investigative lines the issue arises, especially in female victims and sexual abuse in minors.

"We have projects aimed at addressing these cases to avoid psychological sequels. These recent lines must be inserted in order to achieve comprehensive treatment for victims of sexual crimes. They must be included in an LM consultation, together with Psychiatry and Forensic Psychology, and other branches. "

Reyes says that women are the biggest victims of violence in this environment, mainly at the hands of their ex-husbands. LM does not intervene since prevention, but offers important data that contribute to programs and campaigns against violence against women.

A NECESSARY NOTE

For Dr. Víctor Manuel Rodríguez Guevara, also head of the forensic laboratories of the LM Institute of Havana, there is violence in Cuba, but it is not comparable with that occurred in other Latin American countries.

"Here, episodes of mistreatment of women occur, especially by individuals under the influence of alcohol or by jealousy; and in some cases, the least, they cause death. Sometimes due to ignorance or fear of reprisals, women do not report.

"This work is not only ours because society must empower women to know their rights and reduce these events."

There are many challenges of LM in Cuba, but professionals with the will to put their medical knowledge at the service of justice are not lacking. With that perspective, they will arrive at the Forense 2020 International Congress, scheduled from October 12 to 16 next year at the Convention Center with foreign and Cuban participants.
