Las Tunas, Cuba.- Shortly he left with his colleague Adrián Leyva Leyva and the fourth-year student of Medicine, Miriel Ávila, towards the land of El Guaso river, where they would participate in a historic day.
The doctor says "The neurosurgeons of Guantánamo asked for our support, because they did not have the instruments or the training in this type of intervention, it was a rare tumor in the spine and of a large size, the largest I have ever seen in my life. They also requested the collaboration of specialists in Neurophysiology of Santiago de Cuba."
On the gurney of the operating room was a young woman of only 20 years, whose condition caused her severe pain that made her difficult to walk. The procedure, which lasted 10 hours and a half uninterrupted, represented the only medical alternative to his illness.
In the first surgical time, the local doctors removed the tumor structure and then the doctors from Las Tunas intervened. Both shifts were accompanied by professionals from Santiago, responsible for neurophysiological monitoring to prevent any possible damage to the spinal cord or nerve structures.
"We enter the second part to stabilize the spine by means of transpedicular fixation, a modern technology that uses titanium bars and screws of a high cost in the world, which allows the reincorporation of the patient without problems to walk and perform other tasks" , the doctor explains.
Despite the magnitude of the tumor mass, the young woman still managed to walk, and this imposed a greater challenge. "If you manage to remove the tumor, fix the spine, but take the patient with additional damage, the surgery is considered a failure, during the surgical act the margin of error is minimal and you had to reach the objectives without affecting your progress".
In countries of the First World, an operation of this type is valued between 70 and 80 thousand dollars, and here it is free. According to García Cartón, in this province an important number of them have been made with other means of fixation and with the modern material they already add up to 20. "We are one of the few territories that have used this technology, which is why we were called to collaborate´´.
"We are doubly proud, because we were not only able to successfully address this complex case, but we were also the first to carry out the procedure of transpedicular fixation in Guantánamo."Congratulations to the Cuban Neurosurgery and, above all, to the doctors from Las Tunas that attended that operation and shared their experiences to other locations with a promising future on the hand of young talents.
