Las Tunas.- More than fifty applications for loans - totaling 10 million pesos - have been granted since the entry into force last January of the new terms approved by the Cuban banking system to encourage the agricultural production.

"These measures benefit all producers, whether enterprises, cooperatives or usufructuaries. There have been 58 requests for credits in all municipalities. Only five requests are currently being analyzed, the rest has been approved," said Orlando Iglesias Carralero, deputy commercial director of the Credit and Commerce Bank (BANDEC).

"The Bank should examine carefully each credit application to evaluate the risks and conditions of the petitioners, and based on that analysis grant it or not. We have 30 days to respond, but our offices are generally averaging far less time. The responses delay between 15 or 20 days," he said.

The Resolution 7 of 2016 of the Central Bank of Cuba extended to 36 months the grace period after which the different production forms begin to pay off the loans for the improvement and fattening of cattle. It was also established that the state budget assumes the payment of half of the interests on loans for short-cycle crops.

Special emphasis is being done in banks' financial support to productive poles. The Gayol basic business unit, belonging to the Antonio Guiteras agricultural enterprise, has taken advantage of the credit facilities and it has been able to invest more than half a million pesos in new irrigation systems which benefit the crop of cassava and sweet potato.
