Las Tunas managed a strong response against the COVID-19

Having become the second province with the lowest incidence rate of the new coronavirus in the country, Las Tunas deployed a strategy for the control and prevention of SARS-CoV-2 that allowed it to move to the post-Covid-19 recovery phases with 18 confirmed cases, 17 of them recovered, and only one deceased.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- In compliance with the national schedule to prevent the spread of the pandemic, this eastern Cuban province decided to move ahead with the adoption of measures such as the closure of the borders, a management that the Cuban Red Cross effectively carried out accompanied by the Ministry of the Interior and the Transport Company, which constantly adjusted its services.

Dr. Jesús Manuel León Silva, in charge of the multidisciplinary team that makes up the Management Post to follow up on COVID-19 in Las Tunas, told the Cuban News Agency that to date more than 6,700 real-time PCRs have been carried out and more than 5, 600 fast testing kits in search of the presence of the virus.

In addition, since it was put into operation in mid-April, the Virtual Research System has registered 12 thousand 967 people, according to the most recent figures that are handed over to the Provincial Defense Council from this Management Post, he pointed out.

León Silva, who serves as head of the Communicable Diseases Department of the Provincial Hygiene Center, explained that of the 19 premises that functioned as isolation centers in the province, only three currently remain active: the Rita Longa pedagogical school for admission of contacts; the Los Laureles motel, in the municipality of Majibacoa, for suspects; and the Family Club, for international travelers.

The latter, he added, has a capacity for 100 beds, of which only 18 are occupied, with Cuban collaborators who returned from Venezuela and other travelers who came to Cuba from Italy, Spain and the United States.
Having enlisted the Guillermo Domínguez López hospital in Puerto Padre to receive positive patients and the preparation of comprehensive work teams in each of the eight municipalities, enabled the necessary conditions to be created in the event that the Health System was weakened..
In the first line of the confrontation with the new coronavirus were more than 760 health professionals, including doctors, nurses and stomatologists, as well as technicians and technologists, service personnel and operators, stressed the manager.

Similarly, during this time, the active participation in the inquiries of 3,075 medical science students was decisive, an effort that made it possible for about 150 thousand visited people each day.

More than two months without confirmed cases validate the effectiveness of this strategy, although in Las Tunas the guard is not let down. In health institutions, protocols for the care of respiratory conditions remain active and Phase 3 of recovery runs under the implementation of established measures.
