Las Tunas, Cuba.- Thanks to a novel initiative, the waste from the manufacturing process is no longer sent to the landfill approved for industrial waste, but is collected for processing in the area known as lime plant.
Slag cement (also called ground granulated blast furnace slag) is obtained there, a new assortment that supports the bet of the company for the diversification of production and materializes an alternative that also allows a greater care of the environment.
Thus, Acinox Las Tunas contributes to the economic and social development of the country, as this product is ideal for the construction of floors, walls, sidewalks and concrete blocks.
"As a disadvantage we can only point out that it needs more hardening time , so we recommend spraying water several times during the first three days; and it cannot be used in casting with concrete," explained engineer Luis García, director of Industrial Plants at ACINOX.
ACINOX Las Tunas is selling slag cement in bags of 42 kilograms since six months ago. It can be purchased by companies and cooperatives of agricultural production (CPA). It has been used successfully in the manufacture of blocks and to build more than 3,000 square meters of sidewalks for sites such as the housing complex Blanca Rosa, belonging to the municipality of Majibacoa.
