Some 18,739 children under three years of age will receive the first dose during the first phase, which began on February 20th and will continue until the 26th. In a second period, scheduled from April 17th to 23rd, the same group will be vaccinated again and the vaccine will also be reactivated to 4,778 9 years-old children.
The vaccine is administered orally in the offices of the family's doctor and nurse by health staff, responsible to ensure the vaccination of those who, for various reasons, did not do so during the campaign.
When giving the drops, infants should not have a high fever, vomiting or diarrhea; nor should ingest water 30 minutes before and after its application. The product is contraindicated in inmunodeficient children.
Since the 1960s of the late century Cuba was declared the first Latin American country free of poliomyelitis, a contagious disease that essentially affects the nervous system. From 1962 to 2016, almost 84 million doses of polio vaccine have been applied to ensure the protection of the population under the age of 69.
