Executives of the Food Business Group praised the success of this province of eastern Cuba in distributing to its population the food products that the State provides at highly subsidized prices on time.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Víctor Sánchez López, Vice President of such entity from the Ministry of Domestic Trade (MINCIN, by its Spanish acronym), said that the achievements obtained in Las Tunas for several years are not common in other provinces. It is the result of a joint organizational capacity of the Transport and Commerce companies and the wholesale stocker, in spite of the hardships that the national economy suffers.

Since 1962, the Rationing System operates in Cuba, which equitable distributes food and other essential consumer goods to the population. Currently, in accordance with the policy implemented by the MINCIN, each citizen of this Archipelago receives a monthly assortment of eight basic food products, to which are added quantities or specific supplies for infants, elderly or those who require special diets for medical prescription.

The Wholesale Company of Food Products and Other Consumer Goods in Las Tunas places every month edible oil, sugar, bread, rice, and grains, 3,700 tons in total, in the 733 groceries of the territory. This process concludes at the latest on the 26th or 27th of each month, except in February when it ends earlier.

Antonio Ferrer Reyes, director of the Wholesale Company, said that this is possible not only because of the commitment of the local business system, but also, for the support of the Government, the Cuban Communist Party and productive forms such as agricultural cooperatives, who provide the means of transport to reach the places of difficult access.

Although experts warn that the State regulated family basket does not supply all the nutritional needs of the Cuban population, it is still indispensable for sustaining especially the lower income sectors.

The Cuban Government has the aspiration to move towards a system that subsidizes people and not products. But still in the conditions of an open economy, besieged by the U.S. blockade and with undeniable internal deficiencies, this project has no fixed term of realization.
