Although what has been achieved to date in sugar production -more than 70 percent of the total plan- is the province's best performance in recent years; much more favorable would be the situation of having taken better advantage of the potential capacity of the sugar mills.

Las Tunas.- Almost 125 days have passed since the beginning of the harvest and none of the sugar mills has been able to stabilize this crucial indicator: "Majibacoa" is at 64 percent; "Antonio Guiteras;" at 58; "Colombia," 35; and "Amancio Rodríguez," 25. Thus, the province reaches 52 percent.

At that pace of work, it is extremely difficult to keep sugar production up to date. In fact, all the industries, except "Majibacoa" that over exceeds its plan in more than 3,000 tons, count backward in the fulfillment of their productive goals.

That is why the reprogramming of the harvest was designed on the urgent need to strengthen the milling, based in a better organization of the tasks and the most efficient use of the cutting, load and transport equipment available.

Consistent with that purpose, it was decided that the Amancio Rodríguez sugar mill end the harvest to strengthen to the "Colombia" with its sugarcane. It is expected that the most efficient of Las Tunas sugar factories will also increase the use of its potential capacity, as it will mill in addition the raw material that Manatí delivers and a part of the "Antonio Guiteras Colossus."

Rafael Pantaleón Quevedo, head of the sugar harvest in the province, said that such readjustments mean that both "Colombia" and "Majibacoa" increase their respective sugar production commitments and extend the milling until April 29 and May 1st.

These measures alone are not enough to achieve the set objectives. It is needed the accompaniment of a great organization and dedication of the officials, agro-industrial workers and support staff; the optimum use of the working day, greater discipline and exigency, and the attitude of not abandoning the workplace without overcoming the task of the day.

Several specialists consider milling as the rector of the sugar harvest, given the powerful influence it exerts on all indicators of agro-industrial efficiency and compliance with the sugar plan.

It is the great challenge that sugar workers from Las Tunas face, who ratify their commitment to comply with the production plan and contribute an additional amount of sugar to the country's, for which they have enough sugarcane.
