Las Tunas, Cuba.- In the early hours of Monday, April 29, around 5:40, the second storm occurred in the municipality of Manatí, with hail fall, strong winds, numerous electric storms and some rain. In the first hours there were reported electrical damages in some and in roofs of some houses, according to statements by local journalist Andrés Lozano Zamora.
Alexey Moreno Borges, technical deputy director of the Provincial Meteorology Center, told 26Digital that this event was associated with the instability generated by a short wave in the medium and high levels with its axis extended over the north of Cuba; as well as the influence of a humid flow of the Southeast on the low levels of the atmosphere and the strong evening warming. He pointed out that the maximum wind gust in the Meteorological Station of the provincial capital was 54 kilometers per hour (km/h); and a gust of 76 km/h was registered in Puerto Padre on Monday morning.
Moreno Borges reported that the most significant rains were registered in the aqueduct of "Jesús Menéndez", 106 millimeters, and in the rural community of San Antonio, in Jobabo, with 105 millimeters. He also stated that during the next hours the cloudiness and probability of some rains will be maintained.
The expert explained that "the months of April, May, June and July are favorable for the occurrence of such events, due to the great heating of the surface during the day.
It happens when a mass of cold air or a polar wave descends and collides with one of hot air. These weather events are very dangerous and so far it is not possible to forecast them reliably. If the population perceives the sudden formation of clouds and listens to thunders, they should be protected immediately indoors, never under a tree, or near electric or telephone poles," he concluded.
