IAEA Director on Official Visit to Cuba

The General Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano, will arrive Wednesday in Havana on an official visit to the country, the Cuban analogous agency announced.

 

Havana, Cuba.- The official, after having meetings with national authorities, will be present at the opening of the 20th Meeting of the Technical Coordination Body (OCTA), of the Regional Cooperation Agreement for the Fostering of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARCAL), according to the Cuban News Agency.

During the meetingen, to be held from May 20 to 24 at the Meliá Marina Varadero hotel, in the western province of Matanzas, Cuba will assume the Presidency of ARCAL, whose Representative Body (ORA) will be headed by José Fidel Santana, Vice Minister of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma).

Cuba will be at the head of this technical coordination body for two years with the commitment to continue cooperating in the training of human resources, the fostering of nuclear applications and a culture of security in the region, including the Caribbean.

ARCAL is an intergovernmental agreement based on horizontal, technical and economic cooperation to encourage the use of nuclear capabilities and their applications for peaceful purposes.

This organization was founded in 1984 with the participation of Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela, Cuba joined four years later.
