The municipality of Manatí stands out as a pioneer in the country for the implementation and constant search for new projects on the use of clean technologies in rural development.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Abel Peña Alfonso, coordinator of the Bioenergy Project in the territory, assured 26Digital that the municipality's performance was evaluated by a representation of the Global Environment Fund (GEF), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Indio Hatuey grass and forage experimental station.

Abel said that "the results and impacts in the 15 months of implementation of the Bioenergy Project were detailed in this exchange. In addition, interventions were made with the objective of measuring the medium-term development of the actions planned and undertaken to date."

"In this sense, among the most specific issues, the need for greater training on Barbados nut (Jatropha curcas) plantations and technical issues related to calculations, projections and use of new technologies that will be in the hands of local producers were pointed out."

"We toured the different places of the municipality's geography where the sowing of the Jatropha is promoted, such as La Julita farm, where two hectares have been planted. The progress in the plantation of some 40 hectares of the 100 planned in the 13 de Marzo Basic Unit of Cooperative Production (UBPC by its Spanish acronyms) was also observed."

"The approach that we share with the evaluators was that today it is sown thinking on the integrated production of food and energy. That is why in these fields the cultivation of sweet potato and corn intercropping with this plant belonging to the Euphorbiaceous family is evident."

The northern municipality of Las Tunas also has similar plantations of over a year in El Raúl Basic Business Unit (UEB by its Spanish acronyms), in the Vista Hermosa community, which important results are sought in the production of biodiesel, food and, first of all, improve the quality of life of the town.

The evaluation of the Bioenergy Project points out details, is pronounced towards a greater training of the workforce involved and magnifies the impetus of the inhabitants of Manatí to stay at the forefront in the use of clean energies.
