A total of 16 international collaboration projects, promoted by national institutions, contribute in Las Tunas to development in areas such as the environment, health, education, agriculture, water resources and renewable energy.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Iralis Santiesteban, principal specialist of the Office of Local Development, said that the financing for such initiatives comes from sources such as the United Nations Children's Fund, its counterpart against AIDS, the Swiss Agency of Cooperation and the World Food Program, among others.

The official explained that these contributions are a sign of solidarity with Cuba and in contrast to the intention of the White House to economically asphyxiate the Island and impoverish Cubans.

That gesture - the expert added - is fully supported by the Government of the province, responsible for efficiently channeling this year's budget, amounting to nearly 800 million pesos for communal services, health, education, culture, and social assistance, among other destinations.

The officer said that these contributions are closely related to the Local Development Strategy and the 55 projects aimed at the progress of the eight municipalities of the province.

An example of this international collaboration is the Cooperative Rural Development Project of the Eastern Region of Cuba (known as Prodecor), financed by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (Fida), in which various productive bases received tractors, harvesters, plows and irrigation systems used for grain production.

Another example is a soft loan of 25 million dollars, granted by the Fund of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries for International Development and aimed at rehabilitating hydraulic networks in several cities in eastern Cuba, including Las Tunas.

The specialist explained that other donations of social benefit arrive in the province through the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), and the links established with friendship associations.

Santiesteban said that a fund in convertible currency is available, to which state expenditures are added, which will be executed in the Cardiology Service of the Ernesto Guevara hospital, for the care of myocardial infarction.

Contributions will also be palpable at the Genetics Management Center and at the Mártires de Las Tunas Pediatric Hospital. Meanwhile, two other organizations will be benefited as well; the José Martí library project for the care of disabled people, and the Ibero-American House of Décima, in the formation of children regarding this genre of traditional music.

Santiesteban summarized that these donations allowed the entry of equipment and improved working conditions and stay in schools and health centers in the municipalities of Jobabo, Majibacoa, Puerto Padre and Jesús Menéndez, where, in addition, the Ismaelillo child park was restored.

In this regard, she stressed the importance of the drawing of development strategy in each municipality and the designing of a portfolio of attractive projects for investors.
