With the entry into operations of nine radiobases, supported by the so-called 4G technology, the fourth generation of cellular telephony began in this province of eastern Cuba, according to the Territorial Directorate of the Company of Telecommunications of Cuba S.A. (Etecsa).

Las Tunas, Cuba.- This novelty, which implies an improvement in speed during Internet browsing through the mobile data network, is initially only accessible in the capital city of Las Tunas. "The service will be provided to users with higher levels of use of mobile data and whose terminals have the minimum benefits to support it," said Yamilé Agüero Moreira, head of the Commercial and Marketing Department of Etecsa in Las Tunas. "It is a service that is currently being tested; therefore, to the extent that technical facilities allow it, users will gradually be incorporated into the LTE network."

Furthermore, as in the rest of the Archipelago, also here, Etecsa is identifying the eligible users and sending them a text message notifying them that they can use it. "Based on this information, the executive clarifies, they must go to our Commercial Office, which will now be the Telepunto, since the radiobases are only in the provincial capital, to change their SIM card to USIM. She specified that such improvement does have a cost."

The 4G, whose name refers to the fourth mobile generation, is the successor of 3G and its main virtue is that it allows reaching data transmission speeds, at least, 10 times faster than its predecessor. This fourth technological generation is based on a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network. At first, Etecsa has clarified that in Cuba it will only be enabled for data traffic. The users, in addition to being obviously in the coverage area of a 4G base stations, must have a smartphone that supports the LTE network in the frequency of the 1,800 Megahertz (MHz) band 3 and a USIM card.

The company explains on its website that the USIM is the acronym for Universal Subscriber Identification Module. It points out: "It is the chip that, like the SIM, is inserted into the mobile phone to carry out the communication". The traditional SIM only makes possible to connect to 2G and 3G networks. The USIM incorporates applications to handle all current protocols and those that arise in the future due to the evolution of cellular networks. The entity emphasizes that it is more secure, because it includes an algorithm that prevents unauthorized access to the line, encodes calls and Internet traffic with more robust encryption systems.

Yamilé Agüero details that most of the lines that have been activated or changed in the last year already have their USIM cards by default. She explains that users who want to know if they have a SIM or USIM card in their phones, "can send a free SMS to 2266 by typing SIM (no matter if it is uppercase or lowercase) and they will receive a return message with the corresponding information."

Another aspect in which Etecsa insists is that calls and text messages (SMS) continue to flow through the 3G network. Therefore, it is recommended that those who start using 4G to browse mobile data keep their phones set to "automatic network mode".

Last March, Etecsa announced the start of the deployment of the first 4G radiobases in Cuba, located in the territories of Mariel, Havana, Varadero and Cárdenas. Little by little, they were settling in more in the rest of the country with the purpose of decongesting the 3G and 2G networks, giving users the possibility of having a better experience both in browsing and in calls or sending messages.
