September has been a hard month for the Francisco (Paco) Cabrera Metal Structures Company, also known as Metunas, in this province of eastern Cuba.

Las Tunas, Cuba. – The measures to reduce the country's energy consumption have been felt with particular force. This situation is noticed in its crowded area of finished production and the relative tranquility in each of its work zones, which allows realizing what the resurgence of the U.S. blockade means for the entity.

However, they have found a lot to do. Raudel Rosabal González, director of maintenance, says that "it was necessary to reduce work shifts from two to one, as well as readjust individual roles and the amount of the workforce, part of which was placed on equally important tasks such as cleaning and other actions of epidemiological prevention."

Additionally, he says that "we did a study of the most consuming machines and tools in the maintenance workshop with the intention of creating a productive flow that increases productivity, shortens the time of use of the machines to reduce the consumption of electricity."

The actions towards energy efficiency had already begun in Metunas a long time ago before the intervention of President Díaz-Canel on September 11th. He explained that "since the beginning of the year, we have replaced high energy-consuming lamps with those of LED technology that are economical. We also review the consumption standards of greases and lubricants to readjust them as the days go by. We also analyze where the main needs are, always in conciliation with the production area to know which machines are most needed for the fulfillment of the plan."

Rosabal González believes that some measures that have been taken now will last forever. "These measures, he says, have helped us to see from another perspective the technical assurance that should be maintained for the production. We have been reorganizing and the Company has not stopped in the productive area. Maintenance has continued to give a quick and efficient response, taking into account, of course, the failures that occur and the resources we have."

When energy availability improves, they will be ready to move on to the development phase of their industrial infrastructure and boost their production levels. "That will allow us to continue promoting our productions," says the Maintenance Director.

During 2019, the company's staff has worked intensely on the installation of modern equipment that will improve the quality and variety of the productions to be placed on the market, as the only mesh die cutting machine in Cuba.

Rosabal González expressed that, in this case, they do it in conjunction with the Mechanical Company of Santa Clara according to its national relevance, because it will prevent Cuba from the current import of metal die cuttings very useful for the construction, for example, the construction of aerial corridors in industrial buildings. Likewise, the general repair of the tile forming line, another crucial area of the factory, continues. Metunas is one of the suppliers of galvanized zinc tiles for the housing program and other investments that require them in the country.
