Las Tunas, Cuba.- The interpretation of the analyzes of the monthly plenary of the economy in the style of the sport of balls and strikes, the main indicators of the game are in red numbers: the "starters" have failed to achieve that sales and physical productions reach the planned amounts. The "hitters" of the commercial circulation fail in many at-bats, the "catcher" of the export earnings let out a gigantic pass ball of 60 million pesos and "the hit and run plays" of the profits have not given the expected results.
The scenario that now attracts maximum attention in the local management team is the result of the combination of several factors. Las Tunas has not been able to count on the crucial contribution of the third and fourth hitters of its lineup: the sugar and steel producing industries, respectively. The first was announced since the end of the 2018-2019 harvest and although it tried to connect some other hit with the production of sugar derivatives, its options were already very few when it lost the opportunity of the grand slam that would have meant complying with the sugar production plan.
The situation of steel is different. "Injuries" have constantly beset this "slugger" accustomed to break its own records over and over again. The effect of the measures of energy shortage due to the intensification of the U.S. blockade was added to the almost chronic lack of scrap. So it may have some chance at-bat before January 2020, but with no chance of reaching its projected heights.
To top it all, these "defensive errors" of the players in the field of the economic performance of the province persist, whose balance continues to generate concern in the direction of the Communist Party and the Government here. There are, for example, one million pesos allocated to subsidies for the construction of houses without being executed by delinquency in its granting by the municipal administration councils; or that tax collection, both from the state and private sectors, do not reach the expected amounts either.
This sabermetrics diagnosis of the economy in the Balcony of Eastern Cuba takes place without yet knowing for certain what the effects of reducing activity in September will have due to the Trump Administration's foul play, which is determined to cut off all fuel supplies to the country.
Under these conditions, it is up to the relief pitchers in "bullpen": efficiency and savings, to stick up for in the remainder of 2019 and prevent the outlook from becoming worse.
To achieve this, it should be remembered the exhortation made from this province by Alejandro Gil, Minister of Economy and Planning. He called for delimiting, within the reduction of current energy consumption, what is derived from stopping the production of goods and services and what from true savings systems. The measures that denote efficiency, Gil insisted, should remain as a daily practice. Only then, Las Tunas would be able to jump with renewed forces to the "grass" of that rough terrain that is the economy.
